From 8 to 10 July 2026, the Macao Alzheimer’s Disease Association (MADA), together with Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC), organised the “Dementia Care and Smart Older Adult Care Shanghai–Hangzhou Exchange and Study Delegation” to Hangzhou for a three-day professional study visit. The delegation aimed to learn from the advanced experience of the Yangtze River Delta region in dementia care and smart older adult care, while promoting exchange and cooperation between the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area and the Yangtze River Delta in the fields of older adult health and nursing. The activity was funded by the Macao Foundation.

The delegation was led by Professor Van Iat Kio, Vice President of the MADA and Presient of KWNC. Members included directors and supervisors of the Association, faculty members of the College, and representatives from community and residential care service organisations in Macao. The study visit covered smart technology enterprises, older adult care service institutions, higher education institutions and large-scale medical organisations. In-depth exchanges were conducted on topics including early dementia screening, cognitive intervention, integrated medical and older adult care, smart home-based older adult care, and nursing talent development.

During the visit, the delegation’s first stop was BrainCo, located in Hangzhou Future Sci-Tech City, where members learned about the development and application of brain–computer interface technology in cognitive function assessment and intelligent assisted care. The delegation then visited Binjiang Lvkang Sunshine Home and the Xingfuhui Older adult Care Service Project, gaining in-depth insights into graded dementia care, integrated medical and older adult care, and smart home-based older adult care service models.

The delegation also visited the School of Public Health and Nursing of Hangzhou Normal University, where they received a warm welcome from the university’s leadership, faculty members and students. Both sides exchanged views on nursing talent cultivation, dementia research, high-fidelity simulation teaching and other topics, while exploring directions for future cooperation.

As part of the medical institution visit, the delegation went to the First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, where they toured the Department of Geriatrics and the Cognitive Disorders Specialist Diagnosis and Treatment Centre. Members learned about the hospital’s practical experience in multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment (MDT), full-cycle dementia management and transitional care. Exchanges were also held on cross-regional cooperation and professional resource sharing.

Professor Van said that the study visit not only enabled members to gain a deeper understanding of the latest developments in dementia care and smart older adult care in the Yangtze River Delta region, but also further established a cooperation platform between Macao and institutions, medical organisations and related enterprises in Hangzhou.
