"Biliteracy and Trilingualism" Education Policy
"Biliteracy and Trilingualism" Education Mission
Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau has implemented the education policy of Chinese and English (biliteracy) and Cantonese, English and Mandarin (trilingualism) since 2006. "Biliteracy and Trilingualism" education is a manifestation of the aims and objectives of the College and is one of the College's characteristics and strengths. Since 2005, the College has set up a "Biliteracy and Trilingualism Promotion Committee" to promote the planning and implementation of the biliteracy and trilingualism policy.

Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau, as an institution of higher education that blends Chinese and Western cultures, has a special mission in history and in the current social environment. Since the opening up of Macao's gambling rights and the challenges of globalization, the College has been repositioning itself with the goal of becoming an international institution. Therefore, through biliteracy and trilingualism education, we need to cultivate students' linguistic and cultural communication skills, so that they can become culturally literate and professionally competent health care workers.

"Definition of Biliteracy and Trilingualism"
Biliteracy and trilingualism are defined as the use of Chinese and English as the written language, and Cantonese, English and Mandarin as the spoken language.

Medium of Instruction

Since 2006, in addition to the compulsory English subject, two subjects in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programme have been taught in English in each academic year. The College encourages students to listen, speak, read and write in English, and encourages teachers to adopt progressive teaching strategies to find a language learning approach that suits both teachers and students. The language of instruction is adapted to the nature of the subject and the needs of the profession, including the language habits and abilities of the students and teachers, and the depth and practicality of the course. Textbooks and handouts in English are used at the beginning of the course, followed by lectures in English, and finally, English is used as the language of the examination paper of the subject.

Starting from the 2016/2017 academic year, the BSN programme has arranged for students to be enrolled in either the English-medium (EMI) or Chinese-medium (CMI) classes. It is planned that 50-60 percent of the subjects will be taught and assessed in English in the EMI classes, while 20-30 percent of the subjects will be taught and assessed in English in the CMI classes.
